It’s critical to inspire young girls to enjoy physical exercise in a society where devices consume much of our attention. “Girls on the Move” is a movement that encourages girls to use exercise to find their strength, resiliency, and joy rather than merely a fitness program. Let’s explore this enjoyable and motivational manual that highlights the wonders of movement.
Why Girls on the Move Matters
The Challenge
By the time girls reach 9th grade, only about 22% meet the national recommendation of at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Shockingly, almost 28% are already overweight or obese. These statistics highlight the urgent need for interventions that ignite girls’ passion for movement.
The Solution
Enter “Girls on the Move.” This comprehensive school-based program aims to increase moderate to vigorous physical activity among urban girls, particularly those from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Here’s how it works:
The Components
Face-to-Face Motivation:
Two individual counseling sessions are led by registered nurses: one at the start of the intervention period and one at its conclusion. Girls are motivated to create and maintain fitness goals through these programs.
Interactive Web-Based Assistance:
At around 11 weeks into the program, each girl gets personalized iPad encouraging notes. These messages maintain the flame and encourage good behavior.
Club for Physical Activity After School:
Picture a lively area where females congregate to laugh, move, and grow. The ninety-minute after-school club offers a safe space for a range of physical pursuits, including team sports, yoga, and dancing.
The Science Behind It
The program draws inspiration from the Health Promotion Model and the Self-Determination Theory. These frameworks emphasize intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, and social support.
Researchers track girls’ progress using accelerometers to measure moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Cardiovascular fitness is assessed through the PACER (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) scores. Height, weight, and percent body fat are also measured.
The Impact
Girls see improvements in their cardiovascular fitness, increased physical activity, and favorable changes in their body mass index and body fat percentage right after the intervention (17 weeks).
The nine-month follow-up following the intervention is when the true magic happens. “Girls on the Move” wants to instill enduring behaviors so that girls go on with their active lifestyles after the program ends.
Key Lessons for All Girls
Discover Joy: Find the activity that causes your heart to race, whether it’s dancing, cycling, or tag games. Being fit is more of an adventure than a job.
Join Forces: Ask your family, friends, and classmates to come along. Every step is more fun when there is encouragement and laughter to go around.
Celebrate Your Progress: Even small wins add up. Enjoy finishing that additional lap, getting comfortable with a new yoga position, or just making it to class every day.
