Here is a small test.
The next time you write the number zero, pause for a second. That symbol — the one so fundamental to mathematics that the entire digital world runs on it — was formalised during the reign of one Indian king. The next time someone tells you about ancient Rome or ancient Greece being the pinnacle of early human civilisation, remember that at the same moment in history, an Indian empire controlled an estimated 35 per cent of the entire world’s wealth. The next time you walk past a Hindu temple and notice the distinctive style of its tower — that architectural grammar was established during this king’s era and has not fundamentally changed since.
His name was Chandragupta II. His title was Vikramaditya. He ruled from roughly 380 to 415 AD. And he is possibly the most consequential ruler in Indian history that most people — inside India and outside it — have never properly heard of.
This is an attempt to fix that.

The King History Forgot to Make Famous
Let’s get one factor immediately before we pass any additional ones.
When humans list India’s best rulers, names dominate the conversation. Ashoka — the Mauryan emperor who renounced war after the Battle of Kalinga and spent the rest of his reign spreading Buddhism. And Akbar – the Mughal emperor whose religious tolerance and administrative genius constructed one of the most state-of-the-art empires of the mediaeval world.
Both deserve their recognition. But somewhere between the historic world and the mediaeval one, a king who arguably surpassed both of them in terms of lasting cultural and intellectual impact was a quiet disregarder of the famous conversation.
Chandragupta II was born into the Gupta dynasty, but his route to power was not a straight line. He navigated court politics, rival claimants, and external threats before consolidating an empire that stretched from what is now Afghanistan in the northwest to Bengal in the east and from Kashmir in the north down to the Deccan plateau in the south. He then proceeded to extend it similarly — defeating the Shakas, a group of overseas rulers who had controlled western India for four centuries, and pushing Gupta authority all the way to the Arabian Sea.
The title Vikramaditya — meaning “sun of power” or “as brave as the sun” — was not inherited. It was earned. And it stuck because the people of his time clearly felt it was deserved.
So why does Ashoka get the Wikipedia traffic and Vikramaditya get the footnotes? We will come back to that. First, let’s look at what he actually built.
Under His Rule, India Became the Wealthiest and Most Advanced Civilization on Earth
The word “golden age” gets used carelessly. Every civilisation eventually calls one of its periods a golden age in retrospect.
The Gupta period under Chandragupta II is different. We have receipts.
The Chinese Buddhist monk Fa Hien travelled to India around 400 AD, especially to accumulate Buddhist scriptures and have a look at Indian facilities of studying. He spent fourteen years here and wrote distinct accounts of what he saw. His descriptions of the cities, the people, the governance, and the first-class lifestyles under Vikramaditya’s reign resemble something from a civilisation that changed into, by the standards of the historical world, almost shockingly superior.
He wrote that the human beings had been rich and satisfied. That the roads were good. That hospitals existed and treated the poor for free. That the justice system was relatively mild — most punishments did not involve physical harm. That the cities were clean and well-organised.
This was 400 AD. Most of Europe at this point was in the middle of what historians politely call the ‘Migration Period’ — a chaotic era of collapsing empires, constant warfare, and widespread poverty following the decline of Rome. India, under Chandragupta II, was running free hospitals.
Economically, the Gupta Empire at its peak is anticipated to have accounted for roughly a third of global GDP. Trade routes related India to Rome, to the Han dynasty in China, to the kingdoms of Southeast Asia, and to the Arabian Peninsula. Indian merchants were no longer just individuals in international trade – they had been running substantial parts of it.
Pataliputra, the imperial capital, was described by a couple of overseas traders as one of the most magnificent cities they had ever seen — an area of extensive streets, spectacular homes, and a level of city enterprise that most ancient cities could not match.

The Discoveries Made Under His Reign That the Modern World Still Uses Every Day
This is the part that has a tendency to make humans forestall scrolling.
Aryabhata became a mathematician and astronomer who laboured at some point of the Gupta period. His contributions encompass calculating the value of Pi to 4 decimal places – more accurately than most civilisations would do for another thousand years. He proposed that the Earth rotates on its own axis – a full thousand years before Copernicus made the same argument in Europe. He calculated the length of the solar year to within thirteen minutes of the figure modern science uses.
He was doing all of this around 499 AD.
Varahamihira, another pupil of the same era, made great advances in astronomy, astrology, and mathematics. He, as it should be predicted, studied eclipses. He documented that the moon and planets mirror daylight rather than producing their own light. He made contributions to trigonometry that European mathematics might not independently reach for hundreds of years.
And then there is zero.
The concept of 0 as various — not simply as an absence, but as a value that can be utilised in calculations — was advanced and formalised during the Gupta period. This is not a small component. Without zero, there is no positional variety system. Without positional numbers, there is no algebra. Without algebra, there’s no calculus. Without calculus, there are no bridges, no satellites, no computer systems, and no smartphones. The entire architecture of modern mathematics and therefore modern technology traces a line back to Gupta-era India.
Every time anyone anywhere uses the number zero — and that happens billions of times every second across every digital device on earth — they are using something that was given to the world during Vikramaditya’s golden age.
He Didn’t Just Build an Empire — He Built a Civilization That Produced India’s Greatest Art
Kalidasa is to Sanskrit literature what Shakespeare is to English literature. The comparison understates the case — if anything, Kalidasa came first, and Shakespeare came later.
Kalidasa wrote under the patronage of Vikramaditya’s court. His works — Shakuntala, Meghaduta, and Raghuvamsha — are considered the absolute peak of Sanskrit literary achievement and have been translated into each predominant international language. Goethe read Shakuntala in translation and wrote that it contained everything — heaven and earth — in a single work.
Kalidasa was one of the Navaratnas — the 9 gemstones of Vikramaditya’s courtroom. Nine students, artists, and thinkers, each considered the finest of their subjects, gathered collectively in a single royal court at one second in history. The odds of that occurring by accident are essentially 0. Vikramaditya constructed it deliberately. He valued intellectual life enough to invest in it at the highest level.
The Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most remarkable collections of ancient artwork anywhere in the world — include works of art painted throughout the Gupta period. The colours, the technique, the emotional intensity of the figures — they represent a level of creative mastery that took the rest of the ancient world centuries to achieve.
The different style of Hindu temple structure — the shikhara tower, the mandapa hall, and the particular ratios and proportions that outline how Indian temples appear — became set up during the Gupta period. Walk into any traditional Hindu temple built in the last 1,500 years, and you’re walking into an area designed consistent with concepts that Vikramaditya’s generation codified.
The Way He Governed Was So Advanced That Historians Compare It to Modern Welfare States
Fa Hien’s travel accounts — written by an outsider with no particular reason to flatter Indian governance — are the most compelling evidence we have of what life was actually like under Vikramaditya.
Free hospitals for the poor. Documented. Written down by a foreign visitor who had no political stake in making India look good.

Road networks with rest houses placed at regular intervals for travellers. A justice system that relied more on fines than on physical punishment, which by the standards of the ancient world was remarkably humane. Agricultural reforms that improved land productivity and gave farmers a more stable relationship with the land they worked.
Perhaps most striking was his approach to religion. Chandragupta II became a religious Hindu – but his empire changed into a home to thriving Buddhist monasteries, Jain pupils, and groups of multiple faiths. Fa Hien, a Buddhist monk, travelled freely across his Hindu empire, stayed at Buddhist establishments supported by way of nearby donors, and faced no hostility or limit. This became no longer a twist of fate. It reflected a deliberate policy of religious tolerance from the top down.
The governance structure was also more decentralised than most ancient empires. Local rulers and nearby governors were given enormous autonomy so long as they acknowledged Gupta authority. This reduced the brittleness of overcentralised structures and let nearby groups hold their very own customs and traditions.
He Expanded India’s Borders Without Losing a Single Major Battle
Military history tends to focus on the most dramatic battles – Thermopylae, Cannae, and Waterloo. Vikramaditya’s military record is less dramatic in individual moments and more astonishing in its totality.
His most significant military achievement was the defeat of the Shakas — a Scythian group that had controlled western India for roughly four centuries. This was not just a territorial gain. It ended a long period of foreign domination over a strategically vital region, brought the western sea ports under Gupta control, and gave India access to the full Arabian Sea trade network.
No major foreign power attempted to invade or seriously challenge the Gupta Empire during his reign. Whether that was because of his military reputation, his diplomatic skill, or simply the overwhelming economic and military weight of his empire is hard to say. Probably all three.
Walk Through India Today — His Legacy Is Hiding in Plain Sight
In the Qutb Minar complex in Delhi — surrounded by monuments built by later rulers — stands a seven-metre iron pillar. It was erected during the Gupta period, around 402 AD. It has been standing in the open air for 1,600 years.
It has not rusted.
Metallurgists have studied it extensively. The iron used was of remarkable purity, and the production process created a shielding phosphorus-rich layer that has resisted corrosion for 16 centuries. This was not an accident. It was the product of a metallurgical tradition that understood iron at a level the rest of the world would not reach for another thousand years.
That pillar is still there. You can go and see it. You can put your hand on metal that was forged during Vikramaditya’s reign.
Zero. The decimal system. The template for Hindu temple architecture. Kalidasa’s literature. Aryabhata’s astronomy. The Ajanta murals. Ayurveda’s systematic documentation. The concept of India as a civilisational identity rather than just a geographic space — that idea was nurtured and given form during the Gupta golden age.
These are not ancient curiosities. They are the foundations that everything else was built on.

The Most Uncomfortable Question — Why Don’t We Talk About Him More?
Here is an honest answer.
Colonial-era historians who wrote the dominant versions of Indian history were primarily interested in the periods they could most easily document and that most directly led to the present, which meant the Mughal era and the British era. Ancient India got compressed into a preamble.
Ashoka left physical edicts – stone pillars with writing on them, scattered across the subcontinent, impossible to ignore. His legacy was literally carved into rock. Vikramaditya’s legacy was more diffuse – spread across the work of dozens of scholars, artists, and administrators who operated under his patronage without always crediting the king directly.
The achievements of the Gupta golden age got attributed to the individuals who produced them — Aryabhata, Kalidasa, and Varahamihira — rather than to the ruler whose court made it all possible. Which is perhaps fair. But it meant Vikramaditya himself got left in the background.
The Fingerprints Were Always There — We Just Stopped Looking
Every time you use zero, you are using his era’s gift to the world. Every time you visit a Hindu temple, you are walking into a space designed according to his era’s architectural principles. Every time you read Kalidasa — or read anything influenced by Kalidasa, which includes most of classical Indian literature — you are in the long shadow of his court.
He did not conquer the world. He did not leave behind a religious movement that bears his name. He did not build monuments grand enough to make every tourist’s list.
What he built was something harder to see and far more durable — a civilisation at its absolute peak. A moment when science, art, governance, trade, and philosophy all advanced simultaneously under one ruler who understood that an empire’s true strength is not in its armies but in what its people know and create.
That is a difficult thing to put on a Wikipedia page. But it is not a difficult thing to feel, if you know where to look.
So here is the question worth sitting with: if Vikramaditya had a Wikipedia page as famous as Akbar’s, how differently would we understand what India is and where it comes from?
